Brooklyn

Brooklyn Invitational from Richard Grabbe on Vimeo.

Footage from the Brooklyn Invitational...
Which was last weekend?
I didn't roll up, for no good reason.

Other than just needing to get out and grab some miles, by myself.

Anyway, cool bikes, stuff to look at...
And it seems that the video was made by Dick Grabbe.
Awesome.

After being asked for the hundredth time to help a shop mate work underneath their project...

Jack Carr decided that he needed to come up with a machine that could lift things.

LYNX - Rules to Rugby from Soap Creative on Vimeo.

I don't know much about rugby, really.
The rules and such...

But I am always willing to learn new things, you know.

I am still not sure I know anything about rugby, having seen this video...
May have to watch it again.

Little Things

This guy I sorta know, through the internet, is making these little breather bolts...
Kinda one off deals.

I popped em on this weekend, to keep myself away from the television mind melting machine.

Figured I should add some holes to the carb support, while I had it off...
I like holes.

I also swapped shocks on the rear end, but I have no decent profile shots, so you will just have to trust me on that.
Just trying to tighten things up, a bit...
That dangling rigged breather hose shit really bugged me.

I like finding little details on bikes. This falls into that category...
Little things make the whole, they say.

Flow

Flow is one of those things I can't quite explain...
I know what it is.

Sometimes I have it.

Moving, rolling seems to be a part of it.

Skating sorta taught me what it feels like.

If you haven't felt it, I am not sure I can explain.
The combination of self, and movement, the way you move through the world.
That little twitch you add, that makes it something fun.
Dragging fingertips to pick up the energy around.
Spotting gaps which let you pass through sucks and stops.
At your own pace but hearing the world's rhythm.
Moving with and against that rhythm, at the same time.
Just sorta flowing...

WD40

I keep picking up the WD can, thinking it is my beer...

There is a helo idling so close I can feel its propwash.

And it is Friday...

Dinner with my girl.
Bottles.
I need to walk the dog.
That alarm is still going off.
G&R, just because...

Dog walk, smoke toke, joke, can crack, slap back, laugh...
That is my plan.
You want some?

Machines

I like machines...

You may have picked up on that, if you have been lurking here a while.

Mine exposed itself to me, tonight.
Not in an indecent way...
Just in a way that makes me love it.

Enough staring, looking, measuring, thinking...
Machines get that and expose themselves.
They begin to understand you just want to help.

Machines hear when you want to help set them free...

I have been short on breakthroughs, with this bike.
It is stubborn and surly.
But that is why it is here.
We are hearing one another, at this point...

We will reveal each others strengths.
Likewise with the weaknesses.
We have plans...
We will frighten people with the bits we expose.

We are on a mission, or something...
Nobody will get it, which is just fine.

To Do List

To do list, from Johnny Cash...

Busy day.

Tape

I will admit to playing with tape tonight...

That means one of two things.
I am either painting things, or thinking of cutting shit.

I have no paint, so...
Something is going on.
Mainly thinking.

Winter is coming...
I need to prepare.

Friday Fun

Know what?

Motorcycles are fucking fun!

I was gonna do some post about motorcycle safety and accidents.
Maybe address the danger part and that whole "everybody goes down" bullshit people always seem to bring up whenever they learn you ride...
How about that "I didn't see them" excuse that everybody uses when they run over a biker?

No...

I am not in the mood for that, right now.
Not today.

I am in the mood for weaving around, going too fast, eating some bugs and smiling...

Motorcycles are god damned fun!

The Gorn

I love this lizard dude...

Do you remember this episode?
Kirk gets dumped on this planet by some super smart alien guy and has to battle it out with the lizard spaceship captain.

When you are a super smart and powerful alien bro, you can set that sort of thing up for your own amusement, I guess.

Anyway, Kirk and this wheezy lizard go at it for a while.
Hand to had, or whatever captain salamander has going on there...
Until Kirk fashions some crude bazooka out of rocks, sticks and shit laying on the ground.
He blasts lizard man, but only wounds him.

Super smart spaceman guy, who orchestrated the whole fight, is totally bummed out because Kirk refuses to snuff wheezy lizard...

And, I think Kirk held back not out of some high minded moral value - but because he was thinking he might get to hook up with some hot lizard women if he spared captain salamanders life.

Kirk is a dog.

Feeling Cool?

Duchamp

Went to the art museum here, recently, and stumbled into two separate galleries dedicated to work by Duchamp...

Both early and late, to you can see the split from his painterly stuff to the wacky stuff people hate calling art.

Including this bit, which has always intrigued me...
It is much bigger than I had imagined it to be.

A compulsion for hummus cut short my contemplation of this piece, but now that I know where it is I will return and look again.

Wilde Idea

"It is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious."

Gift of Gab

I still use a CD player in the garage...

I am old school, that way.
I use the old machines.

The CD player has years of grinder funk and smoke goo in it and is as grumpy as fuck...
It only plays what I need.

That is how I think it works, at least.
It had never played this, before tonight...
I have given it a go, repeatedly.
I have always assumed it had some special CD write code, some real thing to make it not work.

Tonight, it played.

You hear what you need to, I think...

Trust the machines that know you, that you know.
They will give you what you need, nothing more.
But you will know what to expect.
They will do their job...

Sunday Drive

If you drive long and far enough, you will see them too...

Remembering

I am not going to dwell too much on what today is, here on the internet...

No pictures of firefighters, airplanes, rubble or flags.

I am pretty sure you can go find that somewhere else pretty readily.

I do vividly remember that morning, in Seattle.
Sitting on the bed, watching the world change on a TV in the bedroom.
Trying to process what I was seeing, what it meant.
I remember shaking, slightly...

I remember talking about what we were going to do, if something happened in Seattle, with KVC. Where we would meet, when we could, if it came to that.
I strapped up, that morning, thinking that it seemed a pretty weak defense against a crashing plane.

I went to work that day.
It was cool and damp that morning, in Seattle.
I was on a motorcycle, so I am sure the watery eyes were just caused by the wind...
Nobody really worked, the phones didn't ring except for spouses calling.
Internet news and random reports.
Quiet fear of things nobody could quite process, that day, or still.

And things went on...
In spite of, because of or indifferent to the events of a decade ago.

I do remember.

Terror Alert

Paying attention to any news lately?
I guess there is a significant chance of a terror attack, this weekend...

Details include people who may or may not be in the country.
Folks with "normal sounding" names.
The kind of people who drive cars.
Targets include mass transit or location that draw lots of people.

Those are the people to watch out for, apparently...
That is what Homeland Security says to watch out for.

So, uhm, yeah.
Just watch out for any biped and avoid everything...

Be safe.

Graphic Design

Met a couple of young dudes, either studying or doing graphic design, tonight.

I was left wondering what the hell the graphics were for...
Who actually designs the stuff that needs the graphics?
Why not design the actual thing?

I am sorta baffled by it...
Graphic design.
And I went to school studying art.

Really, don't we have enough witty t shirts, stylish hang tags and shit?
I mean god knows we could do without another ID student conceptual chair or dinner setting, but cripes...

What is the deal with all these graphic design dudes?

It is like going to culinary school to learn how to put icing on a cake, to me...
But who bakes the cake?

Sweeping, summary statements.
I know...
Apologies to any readers with a really great concept for neat crap, printed on a Hanes beefy t.
I am sure your idea is awesome and retro/new...

Broads on Bikes

Has it occurred to you that your grandmother was probably more of a bad-ass than you will ever be?

Scheming

So, I think I have my winter bike plan layed out, in my head...

All done on the cheap, but a plan.

More tightening of mass...
Based on ideas from my favorite machines.
Swing arm or not.
My rear suspension stays, KVC likes to ride.

Lower, tighter, cooler on the back half.
Make some pipes.
Shave some more.
Cut off some fat.
Lots of simple tweaks...

Bottom end breathing mods.
Suspension work on the front end.
Fresh cams.

Basically, tighter...
More base.
Fundemental.

Which is how I seem to build everything.

I have some aesthetic ideas, which are way back on the stovetop...
I think things sorta work, right now, but could be tighter...
Meaner.
More simple or direct.

I will focus on that first.

Oh, I think we are getting another dog too...

Evolution and Politics

I am holding back a bit on the political stuff, at present...

The whole picture of it is less than satisfying, divisive and generally a conflated mess of talking points that amount to nonsense.
You and I both know it, even if we have differing opinions on what should be done to improve our situation.

Anyway, I do find some of the yammering from GOP hopefuls to be a bit...

Crazy.

The evolution thing, for example.

I thought this Dawkins post spoke to that rather effectively-

A politician’s attitude to evolution is perhaps not directly important in itself. It can have unfortunate consequences on education and science policy but, compared to Perry’s and the Tea Party’s pronouncements on other topics such as economics, taxation, history and sexual politics, their ignorance of evolutionary science might be overlooked. Except that a politician’s attitude to evolution, however peripheral it might seem, is a surprisingly apposite litmus test of more general inadequacy. This is because unlike, say, string theory where scientific opinion is genuinely divided, there is about the fact of evolution no doubt at all. Evolution is a fact, as securely established as any in science, and he who denies it betrays woeful ignorance and lack of education, which likely extends to other fields as well. Evolution is not some recondite backwater of science, ignorance of which would be pardonable. It is the stunningly simple but elegant explanation of our very existence and the existence of every living creature on the planet. Thanks to Darwin, we now understand why we are here and why we are the way we are. You cannot be ignorant of evolution and be a cultivated and adequate citizen of today.

I still find it baffling that evolution is still a relevant talking point, in the political context.

Perhaps I have too much faith in the reasoning abilities of my fellow citizens?
