Two Wheels Tuesday
I know.
I kinda expected the Kissmobile to be a bit more impressive too...
(I did actually own one of those, a fact which may make it even less impressive.)

Festive
Yeah, I probably didn't send you a card (or anything) this year...
Uhm, sorry, I guess.
Here is a picture of Salvador Dali's x-mas card from 1960.
Maybe that is enough...

Mirror Ball Man Monday
How about some vaguely pleasant content that is appropriate to the season...
(Also, now I can watch the stats on how many people clicked a link into this place via the web search for"ball man" - which is nice.)

Christmas Music
I feel like I am really getting into the spirit of things...
Reason for the season and all that crap.

Wait, Wait, Wait
OK then, US Navy...
Were you thinking nobody would piece this together?
Huh?
You, my dear reader, might remember, like a week ago, the Navy announced that they had gone operational with some lasers on boats.
Remember that?
Sure you do...
And you have probably heard mention that they are also working on autonomous things too, Right?
Drone boats and planes and all that.
Every branch needs a drone these days, it seems.
And today I spot this story...
Fucking shark drones.
Really?
C'mon Navy.
Seriously?
I know what you are up to...

Meditative
There is some sort of zen to watching this machine turn a steel billet into a crankshaft.
No simple task, not a simple part.
Guessing the folks that programmed all this were not feeling too zen while doing it...
This sort of thing makes me hopeful that there is a Skynet .

Worn Wear
It is relatively rare that I will post up a straight up commercial on here. I can think of a few, that were just funny skits with a product placement but whatever...
Here, though, is a rather interesting bit of story-telling and branding by a company I love, so I don't have many qualms about sharing it and suggesting you give it a look.
If your not familiar with Patagonia, well, get familiar.
Part of what rings my bell in this video is the connection with quality and longevity.
How just keeping something, using it and wearing it out instead of going out and buying a newer thing creates a narrative and weaves in memories - with the added benefit of reducing our impact on the world's available resources.
There are things in my closet that date back to when I was in high school, when I first made it to the west coast and so on. (That's ten to twenty some years, if you are counting.) Still in regular use...
It's been time to replace some things, lately, and I try to look for the item that I am sure will last five years, ten years or longer. That quality kit makes me wince when I look at the price tag, but you only cry once with it. And in our trend driven, disposable culture that sort of durable quality can be a real bitch to find, even.
Anyway, enough ad placements and soapboxing...

Mountain Monday
I am not sure if I am suffering from early onset cabin fever, or what...
Been thinking a lot about mountains lately.
I like mountains.
Haven't really thought about standing on one for some years. It's something I recommend, if you haven't done it.
There is a certain satisfaction derived from dragging boots above a treeline and standing on a squishy glacier.
It's like finding that perfect parking spot at the mall...
(Really, it's not like that at all.)
Anyway, here I am. Looking at maps and shit. Rummaging through boxes of thrice moved gear, doing inventory on what might still work. Reading up on knot tying, though I don't think I need much more than one for the shoes, given the hills close at hand.
All of this sort of thing used to be highly valued to me. Somehow, over time, after moves and alternating life priorities this part of me got put up on the shelf. Might be time to dust it off...
Also, in case you are wondering, it's necessary to pull out an atlas, 'cause this is the ocean state and it is decidedly lacking in any actual mountains.
