It seems that as recently as the late 60's there was not that fetus=life position held by most bible readers. An article in Christianity Today circa 1968, (Billy Graham's magazine), makes this assertion.-
God does not regard the fetus as a soul, no matter how far gestation has progressed. The Law plainly exacts: “If a man kills any human life he will be put to death” (Lev. 24:17). But according to Exodus 21:22-24, the destruction of the fetus is not a capital offense. … Clearly, then, in contrast to the mother, the fetus is not reckoned as a soul.
Imagine that point being rolled out today, in any conservative, Jesus loving, pro-life context. Imagine that getting past the editorial board at that same magazine today.
So, what caused the shift in this dialogue, do you suppose?
Can it be anything more than diversion and a generating of division, if the book and basis for the battle simply does not align?
Something to consider...
